What Does It Mean By Diabetic Ketoacidosis?

Diabetic Ketoacidosis occurs when the blood sugar of a patient is at normal levels, however the body still insists on breaking down fat and muscle to get the energy it needs rather than using the available blood sugar. The main cause of Diabetic Ketoacidosis is low production of insulin in the body. Without insulin, the body’s cells never receive the signal to use the blood sugar and default to reducing body main to maintain themselves. Your doctor will diagnose you with Diabetic Ketoacidosis if this should occur.
Diabetic Ketoacidosis causes body muscle and fat to be broken down, resulting in a metabolic imbalance. Excessive amounts of ketones or fatty acids are produced, overflowing into the person’s bloodstream. Both types of Diabetic patients can be susceptible to Diabetic Ketoacidosis. Blood sugar levels that become much higher than they should be trigger the effect. There are symptoms which can help identify it however. Metal Confusion, breath that smells fruity and sweet, abdominal pain, skin that feels hot, and rapid breathing are some of the most noticeable signs. You may also notice that the person is very thirsty or is feeling nauseated. The person may seem as if they are suffering from being drunk, as high blood sugar level creates the same bodily effects as high alcohol level. Unlike a few drinks however, Diabetic Ketoacidosis does not just wear off over time. It can become serious, and anyone showing symptoms should be taken to a doctor or hospital.
